Currently, it is called the "Tarriff of Carthage," and was the basis for the myth of Marseille's Phoenician origin-- seeming proof that Phoenician cults worshiped in this seaside town in the South of France. The work of Abbé Bargès (1810-1896), an epigrapher and expert in Near Eastern langauges, was particularly keen to support the Phoenician occupancy of Marseille, publishing six monographs on the matter from 1847 to 1888. His work influenced scholarly interpretation of this archaeological site, though the archaeological record itself does not suggest any Phoenician connection.
