Her academic scholarship focused on Medieval social structure, while she was also active as a advocate for women's sufferage. However, in 1908, she turned from both the medieval and the modern towards what lays beyond the viel, focusing on spiritualism. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFive years later, in 1913, she published \"Evidence for the Communication with the Dead,\" which surveys the leading mediumship cases studied by the Society for Psychical Research — including Théodore Flournoy's investigations of Hélène Smith, the automatic writing of Mrs. Verrall and Mrs. Holland, the \"cross-correspondences,\" and especially the American medium Leonora Piper. Hude systematically weighs rival explanations for these phenomena — ordinary imagination and cryptomnesia, telepathy from the living, and clairvoyance — against the hypothesis that the dead themselves are communicating.
