Overall GOOD condition for age. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAbout the Printed Book:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJuan López de Caparroso (1524–1632), also known as the Pinciano or Monopolitano, was a Spanish Dominican friar, theologian, historian, writer, and Catholic bishop appointed to two bishoprics. Born in Borja in the province of Zaragoza, he entered the Dominican Order around the age of sixteen and spent his early years at the convent of San Pablo in Valladolid, studying Scripture and the lives of the popes. From 1579 onward, he served as prior and preacher at a succession of Dominican convents. In 1595, he was appointed bishop of Crotone, in southern Italy, where he pursued reforms of local religious and educational life, reorganized the city's parishes, and supported charitable initiatives, including the establishment of a monte de piedad (a charitable pawnshop). In 1598, he became bishop of Monopoli in Apulia, where he continued similar reforms. He resigned his bishopric in 1608, hoping to return to the convent in Valladolid where he had been formed as a Dominican, although he remained in Italy for several more years as spiritual adviser to the viceroy of Naples. He eventually retired to the convent of San Pablo in Valladolid, where he died on January 18, 1632, at the very ripe age of 108. He was also a prolific author, publishing works on the Virgin Mary, the saints, the Church Fathers, and the history of the Dominican Order.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis \u003cem\u003eEpitome Sanctorum Patrum\u003c\/em\u003e was composed and printed while Juan Lopez was Bishop of Monopoli. It contains excerpts from Church Fathers, arranged by topic (loci communes), sort of like a printed commonplace book, used for composing sermons and general theological study. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAbout the Manuscript Binding Waste: \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe limp vellum binding of the book uses at least three folios to compose the front pastedown and one visible folio with a possible second obscured folio as the rear fly leaf. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe three pastedown and visible flyleaf appear to have been harvested from the same 15th century Italian legal manuscript on paper. The script is in a fairly clear Italian Gothic rotunda with a reasonable amount of abbreviations (one of the most common is \u003cem\u003eglo\u003c\/em\u003e for glossa), and alternating red and blue pilcrows (paragraph marks) beginning statements such as \"Ego in hoc dubio dicrem quod...\" [I, in this doubt, would say that..] (flyleaf, line 9 from bottom, Column A)  and \"Ego dicerem quod tum in duobus casibus non currat\" [I would say that it does not work in both cases] (flyleaf, line 15 from bottom, Column B). \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnly one side of the rear flyleaf is visible as it has been glued to a blank sheet to create a stronger leaf. From the worm holes, another manuscript is visible, between the 15th century legal leaf and the blank. This leaf appears to also be 15th century, though the hand is in a less formal style. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile it has not been possible to identify the exact text of the manuscript, text uses legal language, seemingly \"ut contra adversarium dolosum fiat restitutio\" [so that restitution may be made against a deceitful adversary] (Flyleaf, line 11 from bottom, Column A). Restitution is mentioned several times throughout the two columns with aspects such as \u003cem\u003enegotio \u003c\/em\u003e[business] suggesting that this text deals with the legal administration of the new mercantile class in Italy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe front pastedown has suffered some damage, with approximately half of the text having been excised, but this allows us to see the layers of the other leaves from the same manuscript used to back the pastedown.
