DEMOGEOT, J. Histoire de la littérature française depuis ses origines jusqu’à nos jours. Quinzième édition. Paris: Librairie Hachette, 1876.
[DOUGLAS HYDE ASSOCIATION COPY]
(185 x 115 mm) pp. xiv, 702 (including paginated Appendices and Table analytique). Some minor marginal marks in graphite along certain passages within first 15 pages, elsewhere internally very clean, crisp printing. Bound in full leather, dark green, with Trinity College Dublin crest gilt stamped with simple stamped border lines and flowers in the corners and embossed decoration (front and back coverboards), spine features six gilt decorated panels with title in gilt on red. Gilt gauffers and stamped decoration on fold-ins. Marbled pastedowns and flyleaves with matching marbled fore edge decoration. Endbands in red and yellow. Some foxing to blank flyleaves and half title indicating the work is a part of the Histoire universelle collection. Most significant internal foxing on 512, 649, 664, 678, contemporary with age ; small tear p. 641. Flaw in paper, p. 225 (corner cleanly chipped, not effecting text) , p. 320 (apparent minor snag when pages were cut along bottom, not effecting text). Some slight bumping to corners, evidence of a tugged on end band at top, but not substantial; scuffing to boards. Very little evidence of shelfwear & no sun damage. Douglas Hyde’s armorial bookplate has been pasted overtop the original prize bookplate, likely issued to him.
Overall VERY GOOD copy.
