Hamlin Garland. The Shadow World. New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1908.

(20 x 14.5 cm) pp. v, 295.  Bound in light blue publisher's cloth with art nouveau-esque vignette of hands in black and cream, with titles in black outline and cream interior; titles in gilt on spine. Covers somewhat worn with loss to cream pigment. Red spot on rear cover. Endbands bumped and hinges rubbed. Number 5582 written in ornamental hand in pen on front and rear pastedown. Interior text block clean. Overall VERY GOOD condition

The Shadow World was written as a semi-fictionalized narrative rather than a standard novel, compiled from Garland's actual notes and reports to the American Psychical Society. He details years of sitting in darkened rooms with mediums, observing phenomena like table-lifting, raps, trumpet voices, and automatic writing in order to balance (his own) skepticism vs belief in the these phenomena.
