Bound in layers of printers waste, with top layer a partial folio from 14th century German manuscript, beneath that a ca. 17th or 18th c. manuscript visible, beneath that an early print (likely post-incunable) leaf visible. About the Manuscript: Missal. Mid- to Late- 14th century, or early 15th century, Germany or German-influenced Low Countries. Two columns of Latin on parchment. Rubricated initials (2-line and 1-line) with typical German features such as bulging bowls and thorny ascenders. Overall VERY GOOD condition.

In 1525, Friar Matteo da Bascio reformed the Franciscan Order, founded by St Francis of Assisi in 1209. The emergent Order of Friars Minor Capuchin followed a stricter version of the Franciscan rule and restored the original brown hood (called a cappuccino, and where we get our term for the frothy coffee). During the course of the 16th and 18th century, the Capuchins expanded across Europe, caring for plague victims, preaching in rural areas, and supporting the counter-Reformation. The Order was know for its extreme austerity, with monasteries owning nothing-- making survivals of books from the very limited Capuchin library collections extremely rare, especially outside of institutional holdings. This 1610 work of Marian devotion is one of these few examples, baring both handwritten ownership marks tying it to the Capuchins as well as rubber stamps from the Capuchin library of Halle Belgium. The Capuchins likely owned this book due to their noted devotion to the Virgin, stemming from their Franciscan roots.
The book itself is bound in three layers of historical manuscripts which are significantly not in chronological order. The top layer, a 14th or early 15th century liturgical manuscript, wraps as the book like a full calf binding. Underneath this medieval manuscript, a 17th or 18th century manuscript peaks out, and below this, a bit of early print (likely post-incunable, almost certainly 16th century). The layering of these materials suggests intentionality of using the medieval manuscript as the decorative binding.
The manuscript is a leaf from a Missal, containing the liturgy for the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Sundays after Pentecost (Luke 10:34-39, the Oratio super oblata (Secret), Wisdom 16:20 and Ps. 83:10) . Library labels obscure most of the second column containing the Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost.
