Ellen E. Miles. Our home beyond the tide. Glasgow: David Bryce and Son [n.d. 1880s]
(90 x 60 mm) pp. 128. Each page ruled in red with titles of poems in gothic style lettering at top. Foredges in armenian red. Flyleaves and pastedowns in khaki floral typical of 19th century. Not dated but likely 1880s +/- Twenty-nineth thousand. Mauchline wooden binding with scene from Gloria Dei Chyrch, Palenville, NY. Scuffed. Spine in red fabric which forms the 'under' cover as well. Spine has some darkened stains. Overall GOOD condition.
This is an unusual example of Mauchline binding, typically associated with Mauchline, Scotland and particularly with Robert Burns, in that the scene featured on the impression is from Upstate New York rather than Scotland. The Gloria Dei Church in Palenville, NY still stands in much the same condition as represented on the binding. A cute American cross-over from a Scottish tradition.
