What is a Gentleman? Boston: Loring, Publisher, Corner of Bromfield and Washington Sts., [ca. 1879]
(165 x 125 mm). pp. 76. Darker green publisher’s cloth binding with gilt gitle placard and black ornamentation. Some scuffing to binding along foredge side and hinge of spine; bumping to spine. Interior clean.
I ask myself this all the time. Written as an epistolary book, with letters to Harry from his Mother, this late-19th century etiquette book is a jaunty, gentle guide for young gentlemen of yesteryear. Or perhaps a how-not-to, if you’re into being a bad boy. Picked up under “Self-Help” section of used book store. Possibly arsenical.
